As a 40-year-old small business owner who is newly married and soon will be a Father, I realized this past year that I was very unhappy with not only how I looked but how I felt. I was sluggish, out of breath when I went up subway stairs, my waist size was 36 inches (which was getting tight) and I was overweight. I had been in shape in the past but that had been 10 years earlier when my metabolism was faster and I didn’t worry so much about how I ate. I also did mainly long distance aerobic sports. From time to time, at The Girl Spot, I am able to take advantage of a specialty workshop. Last weekend Judy invited Nerijus Bagdonas, Sports Performance Coach and Private Trainer, to teach us a pole specific workout regimen.
As soon as I learned of this workshop, I signed up. I have worked out my entire life but I get bored easily so I am always looking for new ways to improve my overall physical strength and fitness, and I was not disappointed.
Of course, prior to the workshop I took the opportunity to Facebook stalk this guy, given the fact that he is built like a diesel engine and is cute as a button. (Yes, I can use that phrase due to the fact that I am quite a bit older than he is, but anyone under 40 should not try to pull that off).
So making a mental note to tell Nerijus Bagdonas about privacy settings, and then quickly thinking better of it, I grew increasingly excited about this workshop because it was evident from looking at his photos that he didn’t just talk the talk…this guy walked the walk.
I was like a kid in a candy shop walking into the workshop this weekend. And I was not disappointed. Nerijus was friendly, patient, incredibly knowledgeable, and clearly excited for us to learn about power and explosivity, two key components that will allow me to improve my pole dancing skills.
But it was not easy. Twenty minutes and eleven exercises into the workshop, when I was already feeling winded and fatigued, Nerijus declared: ‘ok, so that’s the warm-up, let’s move on to the workout!’ And move on we did, while our gracious instructor carefully checked our form, gave us modifications as necessary, and explained in detail why each exercise was so important.”
This is a workout I am excited to incorporate into my own fitness regimen, while I remind myself that as with anything, I must start slow and build up. But as I move forward, I have no doubt that this is exactly the type of workout I need to reach my goals. What an opportunity for all of us at The Girl Spot to learn from the best.
Most importantly for anyone considering working with Nerijus – everything has been done over email and skype. I’m based in London and we’ve never done a one on one in person session! It doesn’t matter where or how experienced you are, Nerijus will put together a diet and training plan that will give you the results you want. Nerijus and I have worked together for the last year or so, changing my training routines every 6 weeks or so, mixing in many different disciplines and running through multiple different diet plans. When we started, I weighed 82kg’s at 11% bodyfat and now I’m 88kg’s and 8% bodyfat. Nerijus has helped me achieving all the fitness goals I’ve set, re-working my diet and changing my routines to keep things fresh and exciting in the gym. I have a sports background and yet Nerijus has introduced me to things that I’ve never tried before.
With his guidance I have incorporated kettlebells, ropes, Plyometrics, speed and sprint training all delivering results and keeping me injury free.
The best part about Nerijus’s advice has been how each plan has been tailored to different goals I set myself (increase size, increase speed, improve power/weight ratio etc..). He’s always been massively motivational, helping me push as hard as I think I can go, then pushing me a little harder again. We’ve done cycles ranging from pure power lifting, unilateral training, interval sprint work and cutting for the summer and all have been amazing fun and delivered great results.

Since I live in Europe we had to do it via skype, and if I didn’t understand, Nerijus would just videotape me the exercise! The workouts are varied, so you keep your body and mind in challenge and it won’t get boring, all in all you can challenge your body in a different way everytime by just adding weights, changing speed or repetitions. Each exercise that he proposes is unique but complementary to the one before and after. The progression is so perfect. The warm up is so fun, he teaches original moves that remind me of capoeira. When we work out, my legs, abs, back and arms understand very quickly that it’s gonna be hard! During the sessions I use heavy [medicine] balls with which I break the wall and ceiling (lol), Swiss ball, weights and kettlebells.
